My Appendix

It is no more.

A week ago today, I went to the ER with fairly sharp abdominal pains on my lower right side. It was unlike any pain I had ever experienced before. I went pretty late at night and drove myself and Wilbert stayed home with Joash. I actually didn't have to wait all that long, which is nice. After an initial exam, the doctor was pretty sure it was my appendix. He felt he had jinxed himself because when he came in, he said noticed I had my legs crossed on the bed. He said there was research that had been done that said when a patient had his legs crossed, the condition is not that serious. Well, I think I was just trying to stay warm because it was really cold in that room. After a discussion with the on call surgeon, they decided to put me on antibiotics and keep me over night.

I was moved in the morning to observation and eventually seen by the surgeon who declared I had appendicitis. I was scheduled for surgery at 6. I actually went to surgery a bit earlier. Everything went fine in the surgery. The doctor was surprised to see that my appendix really did not look all that inflamed, but they took it out anyway. So, the doctor is not really sure what was causing all my pain. All my symptoms clearly pointed to my appendix.

Anyway, I was released from the hospital on Tuesday. I am super thankful for my family. I didn't worry at all about Joash and on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, my husband's sister came over to help me out, which was so wonderful.
Joash loves his Tante Reina!

I am still on the mend, but the pain I was experiencing last week is gone, so that is a great blessing!

A Perspective

I have already mentioned my "Word of the Day" screen saver that I have on my laptop that is hooked up to the projector in my room. I am learning that the words go in cycles a bit, so the same word will pop up in several classes during the day. Today's popular word was "entitlement." A fantastic word to share with teenagers who often think they are entitled to a whole lot of stuff. In fact, we as humans often think we are entitled to a whole lot of stuff when really we are fallen people who deserve nothing but death. We so often miss how wonderful and blessed our life really is and we get caught up on the little things. This video sort of puts that in perspective in a rather humorous way. I am by no means promoting this comedian, but if you take what he says to heart, it is so true. We live in an amazing world, created by an amazing God. We really should be happy with the blessing we have been given.

A Little Morning Staycation

So, way back over March Break, the local CBC had several March Break Stay-cation give aways. For the family pass for a Cows Creamery tour, you had call in a moo. My husband called from the barn and was one of the entries chosen to be played on the radio. And he name was also one of the random entries drawn to win the prize. We were supposed to go on a tour of the creamery during March Break, but a crazy snowstorm hit that day. so they told us just to stop in any time during the summer to use our pass. So, we finally went today.  Before we left, we told Joash we had a surprise for him today. "What is it?" he asked. We said that he would have to wait and see. "Is it a silage cart?" he asked. Can you tell what our dinner time conversations have been about lately? We had a nice tour and enjoyed the free samples. We decided to get an early lunch at The Big Orange Lunchbox. Wow! It was very yummy! I am telling you, if you are on PEI and you like a good burger and h...

Band of Sisters by Cathy Gohlke

Starting over. A new life. Better than before. Those were and are the hopes and dreams of so many immigrants throughout the history of the United States. But, so often, these dreams were not realized. And in some cases, the new world brought even more horror. And the worst horror of all is that it is still happening today. Band of  Sisters  by Cathy Gohlke is the powerful and riveting tale of Maureen O’Reilly and her sister Katie Rose. Running from a shameful and difficult life in Ireland, with both of her parents dead, Maureen is looking to start a new life in America. All she wants is to find a respectable job and take care of herself and her sister. Another young man from her home town, Joshua Keeton sails to America on the same ship as Maureen and her sister. He offers to help and watch out for the girls, but Maureen wants nothing to do with him. She soon regrets that decision as she and Katie Rose struggle to make it through Ellis Island. Maureen falls into a tra...
