The Week in Michigan

Once we got to Michigan, we had a GREAT time in Michigan. The weather was fantastic and we tried to do one thing every day. Here are some of the things we did:

We spent the morning at Dutch Village in Holland, Michigan. I hadn't been here since elementary school, so it was fun to see it again and share some of the things I grew up with. We learned to Dutch Dance and saw the large street organ. Joash did a few rides on the Ferris Wheel.
The kids also got to make a stropewaffle. It was a great snack!

We also stopped into visit Grandma VerBeek. It was so nice to see her again and for the kids to put a name with a face.

Another day we went to the Boulder Ridge Wildlife Park. This was a fantastic park! There is a safari ride you take to see many of the larger animals. The rest of the animals are in a very nice area that is easy to walk around. This park was originally started as a business that bred animals for zoos. Because of this, you are able to get quite close to many of the animals. The kids were even able to feed giraffes, birds, kangaroos, camels and prairie dogs.

Almost every evening we had a campfire in my parents back yard. We ate many s'mores and hobo pies.
We also spent part of the day at Holland State Park on Lake Michigan. We picked a cooler, windy day, but the kids didn't care and we all still had fun. Dawn and Conner came with us, too.

We also made a very needed stop in at Grandma Overweg's. It had been 6 years since I had seen her, which was way to long. So, it was so nice to see her and for her to meet the kids. She had see Joash before, but he was only 9 months old. The kids were not the mood for pictures, so this is the best we were able to get.
Our travel home wasn't scheduled to begin until early afternoon on Labor Day, so we also took in the Labor Day Truck Parade in Zeeland. It was fun to see, but rather loud. Gideon didn't mind at all though. He just waved and waved.

It was a great week, but then it was time to head home.

A Perspective

I have already mentioned my "Word of the Day" screen saver that I have on my laptop that is hooked up to the projector in my room. I am learning that the words go in cycles a bit, so the same word will pop up in several classes during the day. Today's popular word was "entitlement." A fantastic word to share with teenagers who often think they are entitled to a whole lot of stuff. In fact, we as humans often think we are entitled to a whole lot of stuff when really we are fallen people who deserve nothing but death. We so often miss how wonderful and blessed our life really is and we get caught up on the little things. This video sort of puts that in perspective in a rather humorous way. I am by no means promoting this comedian, but if you take what he says to heart, it is so true. We live in an amazing world, created by an amazing God. We really should be happy with the blessing we have been given.

An Afternoon at the Park

I am not a mom who spends a lot of time at parks and playgrounds with her kids. This is for several reasons.  1) I have to drive to any park and we all know packing up everyone in the car takes a bit of extra effort 2) Joash doesn't have a really good relationship with playground equipment yet. In the past, he has never wanted to go and explore a playground structure on his own, he didn't really like to swing and he didn't really like slides. So, that kind of limits the amount of fun one can have at a play ground. Why would I drive somewhere to have my kid pretty much want to just sit on my lap the whole time. We can do that at home. 3) Joash doesn't do well when there are too many unfamiliar kids around. Yeah, he is a bit shy and timid. So, he doesn't really like to go on anything that another kid is using. And if he is on something and another kid comes over, he gets off right away and runs to me. But, a new year has come and I thought we should try out...

Unspoken by Dee Henderson

Sometimes a person’s past has more of impact on themselves than even they realizes. Charlotte Graham is such a person. Being the center of a famous kidnapping case when she was only sixteen left her a changed person. But, now that her past is catching up with her, will she be able to face it and move on to finally live completely in freedom? Bryce Bishop meets Charlotte Graham when she comes to him with a huge number of coins to sell. As he slowly learns about her past, Bryce doesn't know what to make of this woman. When she shares that she is the heir to a vast fortune and wants his help to give most of it away, Bryce is faced with a choice. Can he help Charlotte Graham give away her vast fortune and help her heart to heal at the same time? Unspoken by Dee Henderson was a very intriguing book. It took a little bit to get into it, but once I was hooked, I could not put it down. It is a well crafted story where all of the little pieces fit so nicely together by the end. ...
